We hear it all the time. It's everywhere. The constant debate between following your heart and following your mind.
Some say that you should follow your heart:
"Follow your own heart, regardless of what others tell you to do. When all is said and done, it's you who has to live with your decisions and how your heart feels about it." -Unknown
Others say that you should follow your mind:
"Follow your heart but take your brain with you." -Unknown
I've contemplated both of these ideas while going through some of my past circumstances. Should I do this because it feels right? But it's not necessarily logical. Should I do this because it's the logical thing to do? But it doesn't feel right. Most of us have weighed our options when it comes to following our heart vs. following our brain.
We often make too many of our decisions based on how we "feel". "Following your heart" implies basing your decisions on how you feel (mostly emotionally). I've done that before. I've put my emotions first in decisions I've made. When we do that, we let our emotions supersede God's plan for us. And we ignore He wants us to do in specific situations. It's hard to hold your hands up in surrender to what God has for you when you're using both of them to fight back your feelings.
With that, I've come to this conclusion:
Everyday, I need to surrender more and more to God.
It's an on-going process. Every time I strictly follow my heart, I fall flat on my face. Every time I half-follow God and half-follow my heart, I fail. Every time I completely follow logic, I lose. Sometimes, it seems like no-win situation.
So I have made a decision. Instead of following my heart or following my mind, I'm going to follow Jesus.
